Long
follow-up study shows endometriosis increases risks for heart disease.
It has been discovered after
a long follow-up study that endometriosis is a increased risk for heart disease mostly under
those women under 40 years old. According to the New York Times “Endometriosis, the growth of uterine tissue outside the
uterus, may affect as many as 10 percent of women in their reproductive years.”
Its symptoms include painful menstruation, excessive bleeding, and infertility
among others. According to the New York Times the study included “116,430 women
free of heart disease and stroke at the start of the study. By the end of a
20-year follow-up period, 11,903 of the women had been given a diagnosis of
endometriosis.” It is always vital to be healthy and take care of yourself but
for women with Endometriosis the task is even harder. Pregnancies, physical
activity, alcohol intake, diabetes and other factors cause these women to be
52% more likely to have a heart attack, they are 91% more likely to have angina
and 35% more likely to have to undergo coronary bypass surgery. We can see that
women are deeply affected by endometriosis and doctors are currently finding
out more information about the disease.
