Give to Charity

At Escuela Bella Vista, one of the twelve graders, Paulina Maurovich, has created an organization called Community Service Enterprise, also known as CSE. Community Service Enterprise provides opportunities that enable people to provide food, health, and even clothing to the less fortunate. However, this association requires a lot of commitment to work with local organizations and people in order to build strong communities and have a lot of success in helping others. CSE is responsible for engaging, caring, nourishing, and partnering others. In other words, they are committed to help, care, and feed those who cannot afford these needs.
At Community Service Enterprise, every week there is a task to accomplish. Meaning that the Escuela Bella Vista community must collect or do things in order to accomplish a specific goal. For example, the week from September 28 to October 2 students were supposed to bring clothes for kids of the Innocens Foundation; and according to an email sent by the Paulina Maurovich, “We ask for your collaboration, clothes will be collected starting September 25th till October 3rd. Please deliver all donations to Mr. Perez's room”. In order to have a lot of collaborations, this week for every piece of clothing that you brought you were given a raffle ticket for a short from The Rack (a store in Maracaibo organized by two EBV students, Elena and Sabrina Mangialardo).

STUCO Fun Lunch

Participating, playing, and getting involved, all organized by Student Council! At Escuela Bella Vista, the High School Student Council, known as STUCO, organized an event for students to have fun and have a blasting experience playing video games, specifically Smash Bros.

STUCO is a structure built by students, through which they can become involved in events that happen in school, work in partnership through events organized by the school and staff in benefit of a better community. Using Student Council helps students’ to share their ideas and interests with not only their friends but with the school community. This association helps raise funds for school activities. At EBV, typically Student Council organizes events to benefit the students and make them work together as a team.

One of the events organized by High School STUCO is the Fun Lunch. This event took place in the school Auditorium during Lunch on September 25 (a Friday). Students played Smash Bros, a video game, which consists of a series of crossover fighting games (that include Mario Bros). The best part of this school organized event was that the winner was rewarded with Susy’s Cookies.

Signs of Water on the Red Planet

Evidence of water in Mars may bring great changes to our perspective of the earth.

Nasa gave a us a very important piece of information on September 28th 2015. They have officially proven that there is water in Mars after years of research. This may bring a whole lot of change to the Human Race since water on Mars brings us to the possibility of life in Mars. In the future maybe thanks to the discovery that began the day of September 28th, we may be able to live in Mars. Mars is the only planet in our universe other than Earth that shows something in its surface. The Washington Post had the pleasure to interview Lujendra Ojha; the Georgia Tech PhD candidate who led the research and he told them they had also found chemical evidence of perchlorates. As you can see these discoveries can change our world drastically as well as Mars because this may lead us to say goodbye to earth and hello to Mars.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events: horrible events after sad ones

A Series of Unfortunate Events is a book series written by Lemony Snicket featuring the Baudelaire children. Every book made in the series of 13 is an unfortunate event that the children go through. The first book is the first unfortunate event. The Baudelaire children are informed by Mr. Poe, a family friend, while enjoying the beach, about the death of their parents, and the burning of their house and belongings. With a little bit of hope left, the children are bought uncomfortable clothes, and told that the fortune left behind by their fellas will not be used until Violet, the oldest, is of age. The emergency instructions left by their parents are for the children to be raised by family, none close or known by the kids. The three Baudelaire children are sent by Mr. Poe to live with the closest relative: the scary, mean, and heartless Count Olaf. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, almost a baby, will manage their way through the fingers of Count Olaf and his vicious actions to obtain the big fortune.

The Voice; you sing and amaze, or shut up and leave…

3rd grade's Chocolate Factory

This year chocolate party had some good things, some not so good things, some new things and chocolate! This year was a overall a good party. The good part is that there was more than they could eat, and the 3rd graders couldn't have been happier. The parents ate the chocolate with their children and read some stories made by them. There were all sorts of chocolate including Pirulin, Capitas, Susy Cookies, cupcakes and even a chocolate fountain. Many teachers came to celebrate along with the children's parents. The children, parents and teachers had fun!

This is a game changer

The Board games club was different since the club is now focusing in roleplay like D&D (dungeons and dragons) . The club had its first roleplay session on Monday, October 19, 2015 and everybody had fun. Today's activity was creating a character that they are going to use on the next club meeting. This may seem like something that would take only 20 to 30 minutes to do, but from the character stats they had a three hand full! They had to decide a race, job and with dice make the characters points. Races varies from elves to hobbits. It seemed as if it was a Lord of the Rings parade! The jobs varies and each person had something different. Depending on what you choose you could be a rouge that is kind of and stealth warrior, or a druid that can summon animals and interact with the earth. This board games are being every time more and exciting and interactive. You can come whenever you want from 3:30 to 5:00.

New changes in food, new changes in mood

Last year:
The cafeteria was crowded, small. In the cafeteria there was not to much light because there were 8 windows. But outside the windows there were too many trees blocking the sun light that come to the cafeteria. The Cafeteria was not as pretty, the people who worked the cafeteria last year they served the same thing each week. The people who worked there in the cafeteria cleaned after school and sometimes if there was a mess in the tables they cleaned. The tables of the old cafeteria were rectangular. There were a little amount of tables and for the high amount of people in the school. There weren’t to many microwaves. The microwaves were a major problem because there were many people that needed get their food hot and there were 6-7 microwaves. People didn’t enjoyed a lot the old cafeteria.

This year:
This year the cafeteria is clean, bigger, and prettier. The Cafeteria has more light and it has an amazing view. There are more windows and bigger windows. The cafeteria has gotten better and better each time. There is a better choice of food because the cafeteria workers changed. There are more and better microwaves in the cafeteria. There are more tables and its better because there could be more people in the cafeteria. Now all the school enjoys the cafeteria.

EBV Goes for the Olympics

On Thursday September 11 Mr.Gonzales opened the Elementary Math Club at Escuela Bella Vista, welcoming elementary students to boost their math abilities to be prepared for the Math Olympics.

Since the beginning the math club has been welcoming many kids ready to learn and reinforce their skills and thinking in math. On the first day, students started meeting those expectations; about 20 students went and they were ready to start practicing. In the club they practiced with old math olympics tests’ to see how it will be, like the problems and level of difficulty required. Their objective is set and trying to be archived so everything that is left is to focus and learn. The most important thing is that the Elementary Math Club has their target set and won't stop training until they reach it.

Basketball without students

At EBV Mr.Estrada started the  Parents and Teachers’ basketball practice on September 9, bringing together more people in the EBV community.

Like expected from Mr.Estrada a favorable number of parents made it to the first day; specially from lower grades. Also many teachers went and they ended up being about 12 adults. As seen from the practice everyone was having a good time and enjoying the practice and new friends and teachers they got to meet and know a little more about them. Now they are looking foward to make more of these fun nights to have a good time.

Expectations Accomplished

As expected, the middle school boys won the softball tournament!

As expected from the EBV community the middle school boys were champions of the VANAS tournament. Throughout the tournament there was an unusual thing that happened in the team. The boys did not get their undefeated championship as always, and because of that it created some doubts about the team which was managed by Elvis Luzardo. They battled hard until the end until they could accomplish their goal to win that anxious trophy. When it came the time of the home run derby each school needed to pick two of their best batters to compete for the trophy, EBV send Farid Yordi and Jean Paul Barboza. In the final round of the derby Farid Yordi ended up winning the competition over all of the other players from the other schools. There was also the famous award that they always give in each VANAS ( All-Star ) and the ones who finished up winning the awards were: Farid Yordi, Jean Paul Barboza, and Gabriel Benitez. One thing that generated a lot of polemic between the players was that they did not give away the MVP award to any of the players. But, the question is will the boys keep this memorable streak?

“Ready… Set… Go! When was the independence of Venezuela?”

On September 23, the 8th graders had a very competitive morning. They were preparing for a challenging game about the independence of Venezuela. Ms. Nelsy assigned the game (which was going to count as a quiz) to the 8th graders 1 week before so they could prepare well. The game consisted of the following: you had to create your own study guide with questions and answers. The groups had to study their own study guides so then they could answer the question well and complete. The day of the game, everyone was stressed. Ms. Nelsy was asking the questions one by one to each team, but nobody messed up… At the end, everyone got an 100% because they all studied and prepared well for this challenge! Ms. Nelsy was very proud of the 8th graders and as a gift to them, she assigned a test for September 29th!

Udon know how much Japanese Club means to me

This year, the library has added another activity to its fun list of extracurriculars. Japanese Club is taught by Mr. Diaz at the library Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00. This is a fun way for students to expand their language abilities to a more cultural setting. The students involved are mostly from middle school (6th and 7th graders). They learn how to write and speak Japanese, they learn how to understand Japanese, and they learn a bit about Japanese culture. Mr. Diaz says that it will take approximately 2 years for the students to learn Japanese so he thinks the club will last 2 years. Mr. Diaz says: “There is one student that watches a lot of anime and Japanese cartoons and thanks to that he excels in Japanese Club.” Japanese Club is a creative, after-school activity to learn and have a good time!

Bar-B-Q Time

Every school year, at Escuela Bella Vista, teachers, students, parents, friends and staff celebrate the annual back to school barbecue. A barbecue is a meal or gathering at which meat, fish, or other food is cooked in order to celebrate a special event. On Saturday September 15, 2015 at Escuela Bella Vista the barbecue happened. It was filled with many activities that made it an extraordinary day!
One of the activities that took place were inflatables (for small children) on the Big Gym as well as a basketball game on the Small Gym (where high school students and teachers played). On the field, elementary students played soccer and had a “blasting time” according to an elementary student called Wilmer Perez. Other activities that took place near the area of the cafeteria were face painting and decorating vanilla and chocolate cupcakes (which were given free and decorated with sprinkles and syrup). In addition, there were students playing chess in the picnic tables outside of the cafeteria. A surprising yet exciting event that took place in the art rooms was video games. In Ms. Teran’s room there were students playing Just Dance which was brought by a senior and in Ms. Moran’s room students and teachers were playing video games.
The food and beverages at the school barbecue were purchased using tickets in the Big Gym or in the tables outside of the cafeteria. This year the cafeteria people “The Tango Cafeteria” sold hamburgers along with french fries. Parents commented that they were good and very well cooked.

The Life of Hernanza Ruiz

From teaching athletics  all the way to nutrition and diseases!

Hernanza Ruiz is a P.E and health teacher at EBV who loves sports, especially softball. She first came to the EBV community last January and began to teach in her first school. She hopes to stay as long as she can, under the circumstance that she continues to enjoy. Ms. Ruiz is a very big movie fan, she is a fan of the Hunger Games Saga. Ms. Ruiz doesn’t have a favorite movie character, but her favorite actress is Sofia Vergara. Sports have been a part of her life since she was four years old. She loves to teach P.E because she loves to play. Ms. Ruiz believes Dr. Rosie is having a positive impact in our school. She is very passionate about food, especially chocolate although she doesn’t like to make it. Her favorite hobbies include sleeping and playing video games. Ms. Ruiz misses traveling and wishes to someday go to the Netherlands.

All About Mrs. Vielma

I have been in EBV for 6 years and love to teach English and Social Studies, who am I?

Kristin Vielma  has been at EBV for 6 years, since 2010. Up until this year she was teaching fifth grade. Now she is an English and Social Studies middle school teacher, which she is really excited about because she gets to teach her former students again. She loves teaching English because she loves to read and she is learning to love Social Studies because she likes to travel and learn about the world. Mrs. Vielma feels that our EBV community has been positively impacted by Dr. Rosie. She believes Dr. Rosie has already made a true effort to keep the school in good condition. Examples include how the brown shelves are cleaned frequently and how she has decided to take time to get to know the teachers and students by constantly visiting classes. Mrs. Vielma is a dedicated teacher, loyal to the places in which she works.

She enjoys watching American sports such as football and basketball. She likes to practice activities such as swimming and golf. Her favorite movies are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the old version) and Sweet Home Alabama. Mrs. Vielma is a huge fan of Brad Pitt. Her favorite Venezuelan food is the tequeño and her favorite American food is the cheeseburger. She loves to plan vacations and go shopping. Her favorite destination is Amsterdam. Mrs. Vielma is a well rounded individual and EBV is lucky to be able to benefit from her influence for at least two more years.

Get to know Ms.Cutler…

I just moved here from Connecticut in the United States of America. I graduated in the University of Connecticut and studied in Broadjam, London which made me want to teach a broad. This is my second year teaching since I graduated two years ago. Who am I?
Ms. Dana Morgan Cutler was born and raised in the state of Connecticut in the United States of America. In Ms. Cutler’s opinion, her strength is: “that I can connect to everyone that I meet” and her weakness is: “that I am too hard on myself and I do not like to be wrong”. She is a very interesting person and has a twin sister who works at her uncle's car dealer shop. She also has an older sister who is a graphic designer. Ms. Cutler is also very intriguing since her favorite color is pink because “it is a happy color and a girly color”. Her favorite animals are cows “I think they are very cute and just peaceful animals”, and her favorite type of food is pizza “I could eat pizza for every meal: for breakfast, lunch, and dinner”. Her favorite hobbies are shopping “I love to buy shoes”. And watching movies: her favorite one is The Holiday. She also likes traveling hanging out with her friends.
This is Ms. Cutler’s second year teaching, however, her position in her last job was to teach English as a second language to students from kindergarten to fifth grade. The career she would like to be in in five years is: “Five years from now I would like to be back home or in London teaching.” She is most proud of chasing after a dream that many people are scared of which is becoming a teacher.
Ms. Dana’s favorite book is called Because of Mr.Terupt  it is about “a bunch of kids that are in 5th grade and go through a crazy experience; I like it so much because it relates to everybody” according to Ms. Cutler. She recommends many books like Wonder, Because of Mr. Terupt, Holes, The Witches, and all of the books written by Roald Dahl.
In Ms. Cutler’s opinion she can be described in the following five words “silly, understanding/forgiving, accepting, go-getter, and hard worker”. Ms. Cutler believes that Escuela Bella Vista is her ideal working environment because everyone is very supportive and open.

EXTRA, EXTRA: POPCORN BOMB ON THE SCHOOL!

On Friday September 25, an elementary kid wanted to make popcorn outside the cafeteria. Of course the little kid didn’t knew much about the microwaves field and without help of a teacher cooked the popcorn for tooooooooooo long. Experimenting, the little kid made a microwave bomb. The microwave exploded making a booming sound and confusing everyone with a crasht. What can popcorn and a little 3rd grader do!!!?? Scared and shocked the third grader opened the microwave getting the results and conclusion of his experiment, a FLAMING, ON - FIRE POPcorn!!!. Advice for the kid: Next time wear goggles and don’t forget the fire extinguisher.

The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials; second level begins

Based on the second book of the trilogy by James Dashner "The Scorch Trials" movie was released this September 18 on U.S.A. The movie is a continuing story about the "gladers rescue" of the maze. But was it really an rescue? Without a time to relax and understand they fall into another riddle. WKD organization has to face many obstacles to obtain their blueprint, the only problem are the gladers. Led by Thomas (Dylan O´Brien), the help of every glader including Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Newt (Thomas Brodie Sangster), Frypan (Dexter Darden), and many others is needed to survive through the scorch, but where are they going to go? What is the final point?

Do you have enough luck to win?

PTSA organized the first bingo night of the year which everyone enjoyed while PTSA kept saving for other events! All you had to do is have luck for the night and when you had the chance yell  “Bingo!” before someone else and you got to win prizes. This game was a very popular past years but this year not that much, still kids and adults had a great time. This event was localized at the auditorium on Friday, September 24.

The luck in this night was really evened out because different people won. They received prizes such as weights for kitchen, speakers, coupons for Salvador, bracelets, and others. This night was fun and great for whoever went. Based on the fact that not that many people went, others had more chances to say “Bingo”  but when others received gifts and not themselves kids started booing because they wanted the gifts. Winning gifts was easy but, it all depended on your luck for the night...

System Improvement In Bake Sale

Could this year bake sale be the smallest so far? With only 4 different types of food in stack with Susy’s Cookies, Tequenos, Capitas and sodas like Frescolita, Coca Cola and Hit. This year's the bake sale had a new system in which you get a ticket and the ticket can be changed for food. This system was more organized. Like last year the bake sale is taking advantage of the new location by putting the sale there. This new location makes it easier to distribute food and makes the space less cramp. Overall this bake sale was average with higher number of wanted objects.

Trip Of Wonders

The Orlando trip for the 5th graders is coming closer. Ms. Gomez, elementary principal, assured that this year there will be no surprises like last year and they will go in February, not in April. “February is the most ideal time since there is less rain and less people” said Ms. Gomez. “This is the students first act of independence and these trips help them by applying the skill they learn as of now to the real world” said Ms. Majerus. Ms Gomez presented the presentation of Orlando trip in the auditorium to inform parents about it. The trips itself is something magical because it's going to Orlando and having fun with your friends while you learn. There are multiple activities like the Animal Kingdom where they learn about the student survival skills and Nouba, one of the main attractions, it's a circus where you get to see an incredible show then you get to see behind the scenes. The reason that the group goes to the circus is to learn about teamwork and how we all need help no matter how good we are. This year the cost of the trip and hotel have decreased by around 100 dollars each. “Disney has everything for all ages and going there teach them self control” said Ms.Cutler because she thinks that Disney is a good learning for all ages.

From Refugee To Soccer Coach

Here is the story of how a Syrian Refugee became coach of Getafe CF

When people knew that Getafe contributed to a great cause by bringing a Syrian refugee to be the principal coach in one of their teams they all gave their respect towards that club. It all started from managing a soccer club that played in the first division of Syria Soccer League. After he escaped from Syria with his son a unknown source told Getafe about the situation and they decide to take action on that case. So they came with the idea to bring Son Osama Abdul Mohsen to coach one of their teams. When he got to Spain, Real Madrid immediately invited him and his son to go and watch a game of Real Madrid vs Granada in their V.I.P Area. Now is up to Son Osama Abdul Mohsen to show his great capacities of being a coach.

CHILEQUAKE

There was an earthquake in Chile causing tragedy.

As you may or may not know Chile is known for having a lot of earth movement. In September 2015 a 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) and 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck. Chile's earthquake killed at least 5 people and also caused approximately 1 million people to evacuated areas. According to CNN these were the words of a Chilean citizen interviewed: "Everybody ran outside. The windows rattled. Things fell ... The impact was strong" said Emily Hersh, who lives in Santiago. "Even after I stepped outside, I felt the ground moving. Is now up to the Chilean government to help their people get safe and make the territory safe as it used to be."

Danger: Don't Cross!

Warning!
Warning!
Warning!

During September the library has chosen a selection of books that were banned in different countries. These books are known as “banned books”. 1984 written by George Orwell is a very strong book that expresses very strong feelings. 1984 challenged the autocratic governments of the world and it was banned because of politics. It was banned in USA and Europe. Catching Fire (the second book of The Hunger Games) written by Suzanne Collins was also banned for the same reason as 1984. This book challenged politics and governments around the world. Harry Potter: The Tales of Beedle the Bard and its whole series were banned because of the usage of magic. This book was written by J.K. Rowling and the magic in this book went against the beliefs of some people. Other books banned around the world are Twilight, Watchmen, and The Adventures of Captain Underpants. No library believes in censorship, so the MJF Library is encouraging students to read this banned books. The librarians at EBV want students to read these books because reading equals to more knowledge. Also, it encourages freedom of opinion. So if you see warning signs around these books, you already know why!

1-Month Project

If you see the 8th graders working hardly on their computers, don’t distract them: they have an English project due October 1st! The English project was assigned by Ms. Riddle and Ms. Black on September 1st and it’s about figurative language, writing, and analyzing stories. The project consists of four parts. Part one is creating a “book” including all the figurative language given by the teachers. It also has to have 3 examples, one from the book they are reading in class (The True Diary of a Part-Time Indian or Unwind) and 2 from any other source. Lastly, the book also has to include a picture representing the type of figurative language. Part 2 consists of creating a story using all the types of figurative language. Part 3 is analyzing 6 short stories by finding all the figurative language. Part 4 is creating a reflection of the project. This project is very long, but the 8th graders have been given time in class. So you are warned, if you see an 8th grader working hardly on their computers, don’t distract them!

Islamists die of neglect in Egyptian Jails

The story of Mohammad al-Falahgi who died in and Egyptian Prison.

According to reuters.com prisons in Egypt or not giving criminals the care they need to survive. These prisoners have suffered what people call “death by neglect”. One of the criminals who is believed to have died of neglect or poor attention in an Egyptian jail was Mohammad al-Falaghgi. Falahgi had diabetes and liver cirrhosis. In his time in jail he confirmed to his wife that twenty people were living on the amount of food needed for two.  When Falahgi started having trouble urinating and severe abdominal pain he was taken to the hospital. But spent very little time there; not enough for treatment and taken away almost immediately. Umm Ammar, Falahgi’s wife says he was taken to the hospital five times between March and May 2015, but never given the treatment he needed. Meanwhile his kidney and liver were deteriorating. On April 8 he was moved to a hospital with X-rays as a specialty. But after only thirty minutes with a doctor and being told he had stones in his left kidney and inflammation in his right, he was taken back to prison. On May 20th he told his wife that the Aazhar Hospital in Damietta didn’t want to accept him even though the doctor demanded that they did. Finally he was hospitalized but on the 5th day he died. So what do you think: are these prisoners receiving the proper treatment they need, or are they “dying of neglect”?

Fashion Week 2015

"Stunning Models, and Gorgeous clothes, that dazzled on the runways"
This past week was fashion and as we are all aware: most teenage girls are huge fans of it. Fashion week was filled with big runways, gorgeous models, and let's not forget STUNNING CLOTHES! That´s right! This week was filled with dresses, shirts, pants suits, and more from well-known designers that every girl would want in her closet. Even though there are constant fashion shows around the world, Fashion Week is the week where clothes is the number one priority. For every future fashionista out there this week is also very inspiring and motivational and it is certainly entertaining. From Kendall Jenner, and Gigi Hadid, to Emily Ratajkowski and more of these flawless models made the designs look ten times better than they actually are. If fashion is something that you would like to persuade in the future: watching these shows, and learning how to sew, would be a simple and effective way to start.

Taxi vs Uber

"Old Fashioned, or modern and simple?"

Remember those yellow cars that we used to get in if we didn't have a car, or any method of transportation other than public buses? Well, now there is a new method! Uber driving. I know the name doesn't exactly appear to be as if though it were anything related to driving people from place to place, but it is! Uber uses the GPS on your phone to track any drivers that are near you, even if you aren't in a specific address, and you get to pay ONLINE! Taxi driving however is much harder because you have to find a cab that is actually willing to drive you places, and in some cases it can even be a lot more expensive. Is Uber the future of taxis? Yes, it is. Taxis aren't as practical as they used to be so being a cab driver right now is a TOUGH, TOUGH business.
